Car Making Noise When Driving: What It Could Be
Grinding, squealing, clunking, humming, clicking, or rattling can point to different systems. Describe the noise before booking.
Updated 2026-06-09
The timing of the noise matters
A noise while braking is different from a noise over bumps, while turning, at highway speed, during startup, or only when the engine is cold.
Recording when the noise happens helps the shop reproduce it and inspect the right system first.
Common patterns
- Grinding or scraping while braking: possible brake concern.
- Clunking over bumps: possible suspension or steering concern.
- Humming that changes with speed: possible tire, wheel bearing, or driveline concern.
- Clicking while turning: possible axle, steering, or related issue.
- Rattle on startup or acceleration: possible exhaust, shield, engine, or accessory concern.
What to write down
- Where the sound seems to come from.
- What it sounds like in your own words.
- Whether it happens while braking, turning, accelerating, reversing, idling, or driving over bumps.
- Whether the noise is new, getting worse, or linked to a recent impact or repair.
When it is urgent
Stop driving if the noise comes with braking problems, steering changes, smoke, burning smell, leaking fluid, warning lights, or the vehicle feeling unstable.
Green Auto can inspect mechanical noises and explain what needs repair before work starts.
