How to Prep a Car for Winter
A practical winter prep checklist for Ontario drivers: tires, battery, fluids, wipers, brakes, lights, and an emergency kit.

Start before the first storm
Winter prep is basic, but it matters. Cold weather exposes weak batteries, low tire pressure, worn wipers, tired fluids, and brake issues that were easier to ignore in warmer months.
Winter checklist
- Check tire condition, tread depth, and pressure. Consider proper winter tires for Ontario winter driving.
- Test the battery and charging system before a cold snap.
- Use winter washer fluid and replace weak wiper blades.
- Check coolant level and condition.
- Inspect brakes before roads get icy.
- Confirm all lights work and clean the lenses.
- Keep a brush, scraper, booster cables or jump pack, blanket, gloves, flashlight, and basic emergency supplies in the car.
What to ask the shop
Ask for a winter readiness check if you are not sure what the vehicle needs. The goal is simple: make the car start, stop, steer, defrost, and stay visible when the weather turns bad.
